News and Notes:
HENNY DERBY LEG THREE: This Thursday, the Richmond Kickers will take on Forward Madison FC in the final leg of the 2023 Henny Derby. Before this, the two clubs met on June 17 and August 5, both in City Stadium.
While Madison has claimed this year’s Henny Derby trophy — winning the first two matches this season 1-0 and 2-1 respectively — the Kickers head to Breese Stevens Field on Thursday in hopes of controlling the match this time around and setting the stage for next year’s Henny Derby.
In the teams’ last meeting, Kickers defender Dakota Barnathan buried his first professional penalty kick into the back of the net, rocketing the attempt past Madison goalkeeper Bernd Schipmann. This time around, the Kickers will look to score away from the spot and earn the three points.
The match kicks off at Breese Stevens Field at 8 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on CBS 6.3 and ESPN+
LAST MATCH’S MAN OF THE MATCH: Michael Hornsby
This week, Michael Hornsby stood out for the Kickers. The German left back remained stalwart through the match. One clearance, one block and three interceptions on the night, Hornsby locked down the left flank, closing down on opponents and taking advantage of errant passes to switch the field.
On the pitch for the full 90 minutes, Hornsby consistently broke up the attacking front of Union Omaha but did so cleanly, winning one foul and conceding none. On the attack, Hornsby helped to facilitate Kickers possession up the field, popping out into space and making up line runs as needed.
Look for Hornsby to provide the same defensive strength on Thursday, keeping Madison out and sending the Kickers offense in the other direction.
JOHNSON GOES PRO: The Richmond Kickers announced on Tuesday that forward Landon Johnson signed his first professional contract to represent his hometown club on a multi-year deal pending league and federation approval.
Johnson, who previously signed with the club on a USL Academy contract on July 11, 2023, is the first academy player to sign a professional contract under Chief Sporting Officer and Head Coach Darren Sawatzky. Johnson is the youngest professional player to sign directly with the Kickers.
Johnson’s contract signifies the next step in the club’s mission to evolve the player development pathway in the community so that local kids with aspirations to play professionally at the highest levels can work to achieve that reality at home.
The Chesterfield native has amassed 217 minutes played in three starts across seven appearances with the Kickers and debuted in an international friendly against Comunicaciones FC.
Next Home Match:
The Kickers return home on Saturday, Sept. 23rd to host Greenville Triumph SC during Noche de la Herencia Hispana, Hispanic Heritage Night. The doors at City Stadium are set to open at 4:45 p.m. ahead of the 6 p.m. kickoff. Get your tickets before we sell out!
