News and Notes:
SECOND MEETING IN A MONTH: Richmond and South Georgia prepare to square off almost exactly one month from their first meeting of the season — also in Statesboro, Ga.
The Kickers felled the defending USL League One Champs 3-1 in the first-ever matchup between a defending Player Shield Holder and League One Cup holder. The first matchup took place just three days after the Kickers’ closely-contested 1-0 exit in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup at MLS side DC United.
Nathan Aune, Justin Sukow, and Emiliano Terzaghi bagged first-half goals to take an imperious lead into the break. The Roos’ total-team defense stubbornly impeded the hosts throughout the second half. Tormenta got one back with a long-range effort in the 82nd minute, but the final whistle rang shortly after.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK JOÃO GOMIERO: First-year pro, João Gomiero put together a breakout performance at league leaders, North Carolina FC, last Wednesday night, as he proved to be the spark plug for the Kickers’ attack.
The midfielder bagged his first two goals in a Kickers’ shirt including a banger from outside of the box that was named the No. 3 play on SportsCenter Top 10.
He followed up that performance with his first goal at City Stadium, last Saturday, which proved to be the eventual game-winner against Lexington SC.
TERZAGHI SEEKING 50TH KICKERS’ GOAL: USL League One’s all-time leading goalscorer and the Kickers’ third-ranked all-time leading scorer is on the brink of reaching 50 goals for the club.
After compiling 45 goals in his first three USL League One seasons and three more goals during the 2022 and 2023 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup runs, Terzaghi notched his first league goal of 2023 against South Georgia Tormenta FC — bringing his total tally to 49 goals.
Terzaghi sits behind club legends Matthew Delicâte (94) and Rob Ukrop Jr. (64).
Next Home Match:
The Kickers return home on Saturday, June 3rd to host Chattanooga Red Wolves SC during Military Appreciation Night presented by Tech For Troops. The doors at City Stadium are set to open at 5:45 p.m. ahead of the 7 p.m. kickoff. Get your tickets before we sell out!
