The Richmond Kickers opened their 2013 preseason schedule Friday night with a 3-0 win over George Mason University. Scoreless through the first half, the Kickers broke the ice in the 58th minute when trialist Alex Lee delivered a well-placed cross to veteran forward David Bulow. Winning the ball in the air, Bulow nodded home the Kickers’ first goal of the season from seven yards. Two minutes later, with another attack over the right side, Juan Arbelaez (VCU) beat his man to the touch line and cut the ball back to Owusu Sekyere 12 yards out, who buried the ball with his first touch.
Later, Owusu served a corner from the left side that led to a scramble in the box. University of Richmond midfielder Houston Oldham broke free and rounded out the score from 10 yards. Three Kickers Academy players saw time with Vaughn Fowler and Finnlay Wyatt making second half appearances while Evan Fowler earned a full 90 minutes. Trialists Ryan Taylor (Radford) and Joel Helmick (Longwood) split time in goal to preserve the clean sheet.
Next up, the Kickers take onthe Carolina RailHawks on Saturday, March 2 in the showcase game during the weekend’s Ultimate Cup Tournament, hosted jointly by the Richmond Kickers and Chesterfield United.
