RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Kickers handed a 5-0 upset to the league-leading Harrisburg City Islanders in front of 3,538 fans at the Kickers School’s Out Festival Saturday night.  Midfielder Adrian Bumbut connected on a Mike Burke chip to open scoring in the 16th minute.  An own goal in favor of the home side doubled the score before the end of the first half.  Burke assisted again after the restart, this time on a David Bulow tally with Bulow adding his second goal of the night two minutes later, courtesy of a Sascha Görres cross.  As regulation waned, second half substitutes David Rosenbaum and Ross MacKenzie teamed up to round out the scoreline.  Tonight’s victory bumped the Kickers into third place in the USL-2 Standings, with just three points separating them from the top of the table.

After a few close calls within the first 10 minutes of the match, the Kickers capitalized on an opportunity in the 16th minute to give the home side the lead.  Forward Matthew Delicâte played the ball back to Burke, positioned 30 yards out.  The veteran chipped the ball over the defense to an onrushing Bumbut on the right side of the box.  As Tomer Chencinski came off his line, Bumbut beat the keeper and slotted a low ball into the far corner.

The Kickers nearly doubled the score in the 32nd minute when Burke delivered a dangerous cross from the right side of the box.  Delicâte flicked the ball on to a wide-open Bulow at the six-yard line, but his header was collected by Chencinski to keep the offense at bay.

Five minutes later, Görres received the ball on the left side and crossed it into the box.  The ball seemed destined for Delicâte at the far post but in a last-ditch effort to clear the ball, City Islanders defender Tim Velten redirected it over his own goalkeeper to put the Kickers up 2-0.

A pair of goals in a three-minute span opened the second half as Bulow scored consecutively to increase the lead.  Burke played the ball wide to Bulow on the right wing in the 54th minute.  In an effort to cross the ball into the box, Bulow slightly miss-fired and his cross ended up sailing over the helpless goalkeeper and into the far corner of the net.

Two minutes later, a long ball from defender Yomby William found an onrushing Görres deep on the left flank.  Görres took a touch towards the end line and slipped it across the goal mouth.  Connecting with a streaking Bulow, the forward tucked in his second goal of the night from close range.

Harrisburg’s best chance of the night materialized in the 74th minute.  In an effort to clear the ball from harm’s way, Kickers defender Henry Kalungi headed the ball to a wide open Brandon Swartzendruber at the top of the box.   Attempting to avoid the shutout, Swartzendruber fired on an open net but his volley narrowly glanced the post as it sailed wide.

Second-half substitutes MacKenzie and Rosenbaum connected in the 82nd minute to round out the final scoreline.  On a counterattack, rookie forward Rosenbaum collected the ball on the right wing and made a run down the flank.  His well-placed cross found MacKenzie at the penalty spot and his volley to the far corner left Chencinski with no chance.

The Richmond Kickers take to the road for the next five matches, first meeting the Carolina RailHawks in Cary, N.C. on Tuesday, June 9th in the First Round of the U.S. Open Cup.  Next weekend, the Kickers are slated for a back-to-back trip, first visiting the Real Maryland Monarchs on June 13th before taking on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Sunday, June 14th.  The Kickers return to the University of Richmond Stadium on Saturday, July 4th to host the Charlotte Eagles at 1:00 p.m.  Stay tuned to RichmondKickers.com for more information.
